@joshjh:
This is what you must do. Copy the downloaded file to your home folder, and then right click on it and click on the 'extract here' option. This should create a folder called 'alsa-driver'. Then you should open a terminal (Applicaitions>Accessories>Terminal) and type in
cd ./alsa-driver
./configure --enable-dynamic-minors
make
sudo make install-modules
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
[add 'options snd_hda_intel model=hp-dv5' sans quotes to the bottom of the file, even if you have a dv4, etc.]
sudo reboot
After your computer has restarted, you can try typing in alsamixer in the terminal, and adjust the mixer levels to adjust the volume on your speakers. The default value is too low, and it would be better to increase that.
Hope that this was helpful.
The method described by jstalnak worked on my HP Pavilion dv7 1018eg.
I followed the instrucions, the only thing I changed was the 4th. command from:
sudo vim /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base into
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
(The file names are different and I am using a different program, because vim is not installed)
Only the subwoofer doesnt work like it does on my Vista installation. But i donot care, even if the bass under Vista rocks ^^.
WOOHOOOO !
Thanks a lot ! !
Now I am finally independent from Vista ! ! !

Your solution fixed my speaker issue (Pavilion dv5 1235dx) Thank you SO MUCH! Still working on fixing hibernation/standby issues, and that'll fix everything.

Hi all, I've followed the steps given by webs37, jstalnak and others and now the sound works perfectly in my hp pavilion dv4-1413la, thanks a lot to all of you.
I wonder if anyone else has a problem with the mute button's light. It should be going red when I mute and going white when I unmute, but the thing is that is always white, however the mute control works fine.
Thanks
I have an HP dv7-2180us and this solution worked. I updated to the snapshot provided of the alsa-driver and added: options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5 and it works great. Thank you very VERY much to the original poster
Thanks nallen00! This has been bugging me all summer.
I have a hp dv6-1030us that was working fine with Gutsy. No sound since installing Jaunty until today.
I followed directions exactly but I did have to do one more thing:
In kmixer the master was muted but I didn't actually hear anything until I turned up the speaker level.
Thanks again!
Hi,
Massive thanks to jstalnak (#1) and topcoder (#92)
Worked a charm for me (total newb)
