ubuntu X server internal error

I was switching from ext 3 to ext 4 and was doing some other work. I rebotted and the following message showed.

Could not start the x server (your graphical environment due to some internal error.

any ideas of how i could fix this?

I have also tried booting in recovery mode and selecting xfix. When i do that it comes up with
cannot create regular file /etc/x11/xorg.conf20090906082132 "read only file system."
