You'll need to disable onboard graphics in the bios setup. Reboot your PC and at the bios boot screen press the appropriate key - mine is delete - your's may differ. It should say somewhere on the screen. Navigate the setup screens until you find the onboard or on-chip video and change the option to disabled. Save the settings, usually F10, and confirm.

Power down the PC and unplug the power cord at the power supply. Switch your vga/monitor connector to the output on the ATI card, plug the power cord back in and power up.

You do have the ATI card installed, correct??

Re: ATI 9600xt driver ?? I cannot find it

I have the same problem with a Radeon 5800 series card.
When I check Hardware Drivers it says I am running ATI Fire GL.
Catalyst Control Center runs happily and says: Driver packaging version: 8.723.1-100408a-098580C-ATI

Performance is awful - dragging windows is very choppy. Can't enable desktop effects (no driver found).
    PHP Code:
    sid@sid-beast:~$ glxinfo
    name of display
    : :0.0
    X Error of failed request
:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)

Major opcode of failed request:  136 (GLX)

Minor opcode of failed request:  19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)

Serial number of failed request:  20
Current serial number in output stream
    :  20

    sid
    @sid-beast:~$ fglrxinfo
    X Error of failed request
:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)

Major opcode of failed request:  136 (GLX)

Minor opcode of failed request:  19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)

Serial number of failed request:  20
Current serial number in output stream
    :  20
I have installed fglrx from Synapic, and tried the Catlyst drivers from ATI's website.

    OK, solved this while replying!
