    Multi monitor with virtual desktops

I have 2 monitors (nvidea card) and want to make use of the virtual desktops feature. On my laptop I find virtual desktops of extreme help, as they allow me to put things out of the way, and quicly navigate bteween windows. With 2 monitors I'm getting non-intuitive behaviour though, as both screens are seen as just one desktop. The main annoyance here is that I can not switch one screen without switching the other one to. It'd be a lot nicer if I could switch them across desktops individually, or lock a single one, and have the other navigate. It'd also be nicer if both my montors actually took a single virtual desktop.

Is there any way to get such behaviours? (Without rewriting the kernel!)

I'd also expect to get windows of only a single monitor when alt-tab'ing through them
