Re: 9.04 cannot mount CD/DVD drive.

I thought everything was OK on my system until I tried opening an old DVD backup image archive but the thing wouldn't mount. I works OK in Windows XP and Vista. This only happens on "some" CDs and DVDs

Yeah, This has become very confusing. If anyone wants more info just ask. I check this thread a few times a day, being that I started it. I need to get this drive operational soon.

ANYONE PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!!!!!!!

    Sincerely, dead-box

    @ dead-box
Maybe run a few commands and see if anything jumps out.

In your first post was some info from lshw, this
    "status=open"
normally indicates an open drive tray (was the tray open?

If possible put a dvd or cd with a known filesystem in the drive (a movie, data cd not burned on vista, an ubuntu live cd (did you install from a live cd?
Don't use a blank or audio cd

Then run from terminal and post complete output (copy and paste into your reply as text, then highlight with mouse and click on quote icon in message toolbar - fourth from right
    Code:
    sudo lshw -C disk
Then do the same for this
    Code:
     grep "UDMA" /var/log/dmesg
If you have a live cd, if you insert it into the drive, (while you're running jaunty) do you get a 'This medium contains software' and 'software packages' pop ups?
(if so click cancel, mention in reply

    bus info: scsi@4:0.0.0
That seems to be high for a cdrom drive on a laptop (..?) (assuming laptop because of the "ath5k phy0:...."
Did you have any external drives or cards connected when you installed and again, do mention how you installed jaunty.

At any point since you installed was the drive 'working'?

I'm having the same problem. DVD's that would play fine in Vista or Ubuntu 8.10 will not play in 9.04. The cd and DVD drives do not see the disk.

Okay, there's both lists. Also, I installed using a live CD. But this is the awkward part. If I leave that CD in and restart it comes up with the install at boot. It also does this for my 8.04 disk that purchased with the super cool "Switching to Linux" handbook I got from Barnes & Noble. If I insert any other cd for a different OS it will do the same. XP, Vista, Gentoo, Debian, SuSe, Hackintosh OS-X Leopard, etc. It's just that it won't do anything while in Jaunty.

Also, Great appreciation and respect to all of you that have been reading through this thread and helping a Linux newbie understand the Open Source world. I really do appreciate it. Thank you.

Strangely... it's working now? Go figure!?

Anyway, still thanks to everyone who helped along the way! Hopefully everyone else's problems will be solved. If I knew more I would certainly be helping as well. But, I am new relatively new to Linux.

Re: 9.04 cannot mount CD/DVD drive.

Well, after many hours trying to find a software solution, I finally realized that it could be the drive.

I attached my Sony USB drive, and 'presto', it read restricted dvd's right away.

I suspect 9.04 is unkind to older dvd drives.

Time to upgrade the hardware -- unfortunately.

Re: 9.04 cannot mount CD/DVD drive.

i had same problem. I'm using laptop Vaio NR498e. I installed 02 OS:
    - Window 7 RC
    - Ubutu 9.04
When i used Ubuntu8.10, my DVD-rom worked fine. But when i upgrade to 9.04. It's fail. I still can use my DVD-ROM in Window 7 RC.

I read the whole topic and i realize that no way to resolve my problem? .. so sad.

    Anyone have any suggestion?
