Hello I have installed 3.1 but whenever I open it I get the following message: "Error getting mail password" but I am given no opportunity to enter it.

I downgraded to 3.0, works fine now.

I got finally around using the script ubuntuzilla :

thunderbird 3.1 has not even made it to an alpha release, so no surprise that it comes with all sorts of bugs.
use the stable release (3.0.1 as of this writing) and you're less likely to run into such showstopper bugs.
either install manually, or use the ubuntuzilla repository for a nice automatic solution.
(or just stick to the ubuntu repos tbird2)
